Clinical Group

The remit of the Clinical Group is to oversee the following aspects of the national programme:

  • Training and education
  • National (external) quality assurance
  • Internal quality assurance
  • Ophthalmology referral issues
  • Grading, image quality and position
  • Technical failure examination standards

The clinical group is made up of the lead clinicians for Diabetic Retinopathy Screening for each health board area. The Lead Clinician in each health board area is jointly responsible with the relevant Service Manager for delivery of the programme in line with the DRS Service Manual.

Grading Scheme 2007 Version 1.1

The Grading Scheme has been amended to include some improved definitions to describe the outcome of the grades and also provide guidance on image quality. The latest version can be download or viewed here:

Work Based assessment for slit lamp examinations
